The best engine I can think of is probably the 5.7 Hemi my Jeep comes with. I’m probably biased because it’s the engine in my car.
I think its a simple V8 with modern technology on its heads, its a gym bro that actually gets good grades on precalc for the AP program. I know that a lot of people really like the Coyote and the LS, but I’ll go left-of-field, I like the FCA 5.7 engine for many reasons, out of all the things my jeep crapped out during seven years of usage, the engine was never one of them, it never asked more than for some oil changes now and then and some preventive maintenance. It sounds great, it picks up nicely, and its, again, simple.
Generally I prefer more complex engines, for instance I am absolutely taken by VWAG’s EA898 4.0 L tri-turbo engine, it is a VWAG engine so it does have those annoying plastic chain tensioners that last as much as Youtuber’s career, but then again, being careful about it could probably save it!
Talking about chains and timing: I am more of a fan of the Freevalve tech that Koenigsegg designed and I honestly see more use for an electronic setup than a mechanical one, when you add simplicity it only makes the engine better. It is still a system that has a lot of issues worth ironing out, but I honestly think that it’s the way to go for ICE engines, together with HCCI technology. I think some manufacturer is talking about mechanically actuated adaptive displacement (by way of changing the stroke of pistons, don’t ask me how) but I see the most improvement in going for electronic heads, especially now that more parameters can be added, its cheaper than ever, and its advantages are quite noticeable both in the fact that it’s easier to manufacture, and easier to tune (or modify the tune)

As a piece of engineering the f20-f22c is really impressive at what it does at a mass produced unit.

I have to ask... Why the M152?

M113. Good power, good sound, extremely reliable, very easy to work on, and simple design.
M156. Just fuckin’ bitchin’.
11 degree testastretta desmo. Just ride one.

Toss up between the Buick-Rover V8, the Jaguar 5.0 V8, the VQ, the 3800 (mostly in s/c form), or the tried and true SBC/LS. Kia’s two litre turbo four is cool too.
I am a man of complicated taste.

Same! I have one in my Ram and it has been incredibly reliable! I’m also a huge fan of the Pentastar V6.

According to Google, an engine is simply “a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion.”

Don’t have a real opinion about the penta to be fair, but my entire extended family runs v8 cherokees and the only unreliable bits have nothing to do with the engine. The 5.7 is a great motor!

You like overy complex engines and don’t mention the quad-turbo BMW B57? 394 hp and 561 torques from a 3.0L I6 diesel. It has a twin sequential turbo setup. 0-60 in 4.5s in a 7-series and returns 41mpg.

Thrusters are generally a secondary control system.
This is a RS-25 Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME).

5.7 hemi owner here too and I’ve enjoyed the one in my Charger quite a bit as well. And while I am usually enthralled with complex feats of human ingenuity, when you can make awesome amounts of power without a ton of complex work it seems more I dunno...interesting maybe? Favorite engine I suppose has to be the final Cadillac big block series 472/500 yes eventually they downgraded them from there to 425 and eventually 368(where the dreaded V8-6-4 came into play) but it still is the largest V8 installed in a passenger car from the factory and they make torque for days. All without really doing anything remotely close to resembling effort in a giant land yacht that is an early 70’s Caddy. Effortless torquey ‘murican power. About the only things they won’t do is get good mileage or rev past about 4500 rpm without complaining

I do wonder what 8.2L of displacement sounds like. It must be beautifully exessive.

The Ford Flathead V8. Horribly inefficient, horribly outdated, yet they still look incredible, and sound amazing. Not to mention that they’re the foundation for hot rodding, and in a broader sense, modifying an engine for power and speed, and engine swaps. Obviously people were modifying engines for more power and speed ever since the first engine was made, but the flathead made the idea of modification common place. It’s where some of the biggest names in horsepower got their start, and is one of the most historically significant engines ever made.
Second choice is the 6.8L Ford Triton V10, I’m a fan of the Mod motors in general, particularly the 5.4, and 6.8. The 4.6 will forever be a dog though.
Edit: Need to add another, the Harley Davidson Shovelhead, just love the way they look and sound.

Most people dislike the modulars. I understand why thr v8 isn’t loved, but the v10 must be salvageable
![]() 01/29/2018 at 10:48 |
|
The modulars weren’t without problems, that’s for sure, but the problems are well known, easily preventable, and usually cheap to fix. I hear a lot of people complaining about how they’re such complex engines, which I don’t understand. They’re simply coil over plug, SOHC V8's, with variable valve timing added in the second generation (one of the common failure points). In their time the 5.4 made good torque, at very low RPM, and respectable horsepower, though not class leading by any means, same with the V10, (again the 4.6 was a dog). While not as easy or cheap to modify as an LS the modulars have been proven to be fairly easy to mod, and can handle a lot of horsepower. While certainly not the greatest engine ever built I don’t think the modular deserves all the hate it gets. Mine has served me very well for 205,000 miles.
